How to File a Patent in Brazil
Patents in Brazil are granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) under the Industrial Property Law (Law 9,279/1996). Brazil has no provisional application; the filing date comes from the application itself.

Invention patents last 20 years from filing and utility models 15 years; since the Supreme Court's 2021 decision there is no longer a minimum term counted from grant. Applications are kept confidential for 18 months and then published. Examination is not automatic: the applicant must request it within 36 months of filing.
